LOTE Standards Review
On Monday, April 8th, Deputy Commissioner Angelica Infante-Green provided an overview of the Languages Other Than English (LOTE) Standards revision process to the New York State Board of Regents.Ìý Recognizing the need to continually improve the Learning Standards that guide education in New York State, the Office of Bilingual Education and World Languages (OBEWL) will conduct a revision process of the State’s LOTE Standards, also referred to as World Languages.ÌýÌý
To ensure that the revised standards for World Languages reflect the views of educators and stakeholders from throughout New York State, OBEWL will convene Regional Standards Review Committees. These committees will represent various parts of the State with a wide range of expertise including classroom teachers, building leaders, district level leaders, parents, students, higher education faculty, world language organization representatives and business and community members.
The Regional Standards Review Committees will meet in person and virtually on a monthly basis to provide recommended revisions to the standards.Ìý Based on these recommendations and feedback solicited from additional NYS stakeholders, the standards will be revised further before final recommendations are brought to the Board of Regents for consideration.
Recruitment for the committees will be done through a statewide selection process hosted on the ̨ÍåÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ website during April-May 2019.Ìý Applicants for these committees can apply online by clicking on theÌý. There are two parts to the application:Ìý (1) this online application and (2) a letter of support submitted on behalf of the applicant to candace.black@nysed.gov.Ìý All materials must be received by no later than 3 p.m. EST on Friday, May 10, 2019 for an applicant to be considered.Ìý The OBEWL and the World Languages Leadership Team will review submitted applications to select and notify committee members by Friday, May 17th.
