Training Panelists to Evaluate Culminating Projects & Presentations

Panelists must be trained in how to use the rubric to identify and discuss the acceptable evidence to justify the proficiency level attained by the student.Ìý This webinar will discuss the process for recruiting and training panelists to evaluate Culminating Project and Presentations for the NYS Seal of Biliteracy, including working with school staff or community members who may not have a background in education.Ìý During this session, participants will work in small breakout rooms to evaluate portions of sample student work, presentations, and recordings of panelists’ discussions following the presentations to identify high-leverage practices, as well as practices to avoid when calibrating scoring. ÌýOBEWL’s annual process of visiting NYSSB schools to provide feedback and support will also be reviewed.

Candace BlackÌýis the World Languages Associate in the Office of Bilingual Education and World Languages at the ̨ÍåÂãÁÄÖ±²¥. ÌýShe is currently leading the implementation of the revised NYS World Languages Standards and oversees the NYS Seal of Biliteracy program.Ìý Candace graduated summa cum laude with a B.A. in French from SUNY Potsdam and earned both her M.B.A., and M.A.T. from the University of Rochester. A National Board-Certified Teacher, Candace taught French for 21 years and served as an IB Diploma Coordinator. In 2021, she was the recipient of the President’s Award for both NYSAFLT and NYSAWLA and was elected as a Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Palmes académiques by the French government.Ìý In all her roles, most especially her current one, Candace is deeply committed to the professional learning and support of World Language teachers and the promotion of the NYS Seal of Biliteracy.Ìý

Dr. Jordan GonzálezÌýis an Administrative Coordinator and Lead Resource Specialist for the Long Island Regional Bilingual Education Resource Network (L.I.RBERN).Ìý He is a faculty member at St. John’s University Graduate Programs in TESOL and Bilingual Education and is on the Board of Directors for the New York State Association for Bilingual Education (NYSABE).Ìý Dr. González started his career as an English as a New Language (ENL) and Spanish Heritage Language Arts (HLA) tenured teacher in New York City Public Schools.Ìý He was later a tenured Director of Language Acquisition for Yonkers Public Schools where he initiated the district’s New York State Seal of Biliteracy program. His research interests include feedback for L2 writing development, trauma-informed pedagogies, and school systems development for Multilingual Learner success.Ìý

To receive a certificate of completion (including a CTLE certificate), NYS educators must view the recording of the webinar (see link above) in its entirety and then answer at least seven out of ten questions correctly on a post assessment.Ìý If the minimum required score (7 out of 10) is achieved, the educator will receive a certificate via emailÌýwithin about 24 hours.Ìý For the convenience of our World Language educators, there are multiple versions of the post assessment available (see 8 versions of the post assessment below), should the required score not be achieved on the first attempt.ÌýEducators may take each version of the post assessmentÌýonce.ÌýÌýCredit will not be given for taking a single version of the post assessment more than once.ÌýEducators may receive credit for viewing the webinar recording and passing a post assessment once in each academic year and are encouraged to take a different version of the post assessment on a yearly basis to review and test their knowledge of the webinar's content.Ìý It is the responsibility of the individual educator to keep track of the information on the professional learning they complete each year, including the number of CTLE hours.
